New Harmonies: Cultivating Intentional Community
July 12 - 13, 2014
We are very excited to host our second annual gathering of intentional communities. Geared towards people interested in communal living, those currently living in community, as well as people who have lived in intentional community in the past. We consider all these perspectives important in dynamic explorations of the possibilities and realities of community living.
About the gathering
We'll gather starting Saturday, July 12 at 10:00 am, and continue until Sunday after lunch. Our time together will be both structured and free flowing - depending on your personal preferences. There will be several opportunities to join facilitated discussions about different themes in communal living, focused on exploring the balance between the personal and the communal. We're honored to have friends from Bread and Roses in Syracuse, NY come to share stories on these panels. We'll concurrently run hands-on activities for those who don't like to sit still and talk! The structured activities will last about 1 1/2 hours each. The setting of Wheelock Mountain Farm also offers plenty of fields, woods, and water for your exploration and enjoyment at any time during the gathering.
As organizers, we have planned to provide the basic skeleton of the group living together during the gathering. As participants, we'll all chip in to help make things fly.
Keynote Conversation 4:00 Saturday
If you are not able to carve out a full 1 1/2 days to join our gathering, we hope that at a minimum you'll come join us for this conversation at 4:00 on Saturday and a potluck dinner following. What we're calling our "keynote discussion" expands the theme of balancing the personal and the communal - in this discussion, we'll explore balancing between the internal community and the larger external community of which it is a part. That is, when we live in close, intentional community (our communal "personal"), how do we balance our interactions and responsibilities to the larger society in which we live (the communal's "communal" so to speak)? We are very fortunate to have Sandor Katz join us for this discussion; taking a break from his fermenting fame, he'll share his stories and thoughts from living several years at Short Mountain, a queer community in Tennessee.

- Wholesome, vegetarian snacks and meals are included. Menus will be planned, food already purchased, and kitchen angels on duty to help direct volunteer in prep, cooking, and clean up.
- Child care will be offered during the structured activity times, facilitated by 1 or 2 predetermined providers. We will also be looking to volunteers to join our providers. If you will be bringing children, please contact us so we can plan properly.
- Wheelock Mtn Farm offers lovely camping spots with outhouses and nearby water spigots, as well as a few rustic indoor spaces for those unable to camp out. If you would like one of the indoor spaces, please contact us for an informal reservation.
- Cell phone reception is very spotty at our site. Plan for an off-line experience.
- Also, while we all love furry family members, please leave your pets at home.
