For the last twenty years, Wheelock Mountain Farm has been offering classes and workshops to share land-based cooperative living skills. We are currently accepting applications for both our three-month hands-on Homesteading Intensive and our Maple Syrup Production Intensive. Homesteading and Small Scale Diversified Farming The Homesteading Intensive will include close collaboration with skilled instructors on a variety of meaningful projects. Participants will improve their hard-skills--sustainable food production and preservation, animal husbandry, pasture management, construction, and equipment maintenance--while proactively building their interpersonal communication, collaboration, and conflict resolution skills. Projects will include mapping and site design, polycultural gardening, orchard and pasture improvement, beekeeping for pollination, honey, and wax production, solar shower construction, wiring a small house for electricity, haymaking, and milking and caring for our herds of cows and sheep. Maple Syrup Production There is a great deal more than tapping trees and boiling sap to running a successful maple syrup operation, and our Maple Syrup Production Intensive is designed to facilitate hands-on learning of everything you need to know to do it well. From site selection, preparation and maintenance, to firewood harvest, evaporator operation, sugar content analysis, bottling and marketing completion of this class will leave you poised to become a professional sugarmaker.
Because of the intensive nature of these programs class size is limited. Please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org to discuss the details and to inquire about grants and/or scholarships that may help cover most of the tuition if the cost is prohibitive.
