Hey, are you thrifty, creative, and concerned about the amount of energy wasted and junk accumulating on the planet? Join the Swap Sisters on March 20th from 1-4pm at the Hardwick Elementary School for our 2nd annual event all about reducing waste. The bonanza will focus on how to waste less energy and materials by fixing, maintaining, reusing, sharing, repurposing, and coming up with creative alternative solutions. We'll offer a series of short presentations and discussions by community members about fun and practical ways to reduce waste. We'll also have a craft materials swap at the end- bring any non-toxic craft materials that no longer serve your purposes and swap them out for something new and exciting (fabrics, paper, yarn, ribbons, buttons, art supplies...) Some of the presentations at this year's Waste Less Bonanza include: -How to build simple systems for catching, storing, and solar heating water -Brainstorm session about what to do with cans, bottles, bailing, twine, ....insert junk here -What's it like living without a car in VT? Ride-sharing and hitch hiking -What can we share? A look at how we can share resources as neighbors, including the example of tool sharing by the Small Farmer's Guild -What else can be recycled at ARCC in Barre? -How to turn old sweaters into yarn -How to turn a tin can into a stove For more information and photos from last year's event check out the Facebook Event Page. Wheelock Mountain Farm is excited to spread the word about Migrant Justice/Justicia Migrante's newest campaign to ensure that Vermont dairy workers have dignified working conditions. We have a lot of change ahead if we're to live up to our state's image of clean, green, and friendly. The fields and cows may be picturesque and the dairy products wholesome--but what about the lives of people producing this bounty? In the Vermont dairy industry. . . 40% of dairy workers receive less than the VT minimum wage 20% have their first wages withheld; that's wage theft, folks 30% have to work seven or more hours without a break to eat 30% have had mostly preventable workplace injuries or illnesses Many workers work 12-14 hour days without a day of rest Many workers live in deplorable housing conditions Please follow these links to learn more and to TAKE ACTION. Here's a great article in The Nation about the Milk With Dignity Campaign!!! Join the Swap Sisters for an afternoon of workshops, tasting, and swapping. Wheelock Mountain Farm has been hosting 2nd Tuesday of the Month Potlucks for the last four years. Each June, our potluck has commemorated June 11th--The International Day of Solidarity with Marius Mason, Eric McDavid, & Long-Term Anarchist Prisoners. This year, the second Tuesday of June is June 9th, and on that night we will again be honoring and invoking those suffering from state repression for their engagement in eco-liberation struggles. The international June 11th organizing crew is calling this a year of transition and a year for celebration--celebration for Eric McDavid's getting out of prison (10 years early because the FBI was caught with holding evidence from the defense), and for Marius Mason's coming out of an imposed gender role. This year Marius came out publicly as a man and began seeking resources for his physical transition.
This year also saw state repression, and resistance to it, grow with uprisings against police in Ferguson, New York, and Baltimore (to name the most obvious). It is in the spirit of intersectional liberation struggles that we will come together, share stories, information, and strategies, and decide how we can best support our comrades on the inside and on the outside. It'd be great to see lots of folks out, but if you can't make it please consider making a donation and writing a letter to Marius or Eric! <3 Join us for a Sugarhouse Brunch! 11:00 - 2:00 Saturday April 18th, 2015 Wheelock Mountain Farm (Directions Here) It hasn't been easy (see the picture below), but the roads are broken, the trees are tapped, and the sap is flowing. Come out to Wheelock Mountain Farm on Saturday March 7th from 1pm-5pm to help us get ready for this year's sugaring season! Income from Maple Syrup is one of the ways that we are able to fund our programming and pay our property taxes, insurance, and maintenance costs in order to keep this beautiful space available to the community. On Saturday March 7th from 1pm to 5pm we'll be out in the sugar bush--leveling the evaporator pans, stacking firewood, shoveling snow, putting up prayer flags, and doing light cleaning and repairs to the sugar "shack". Bring your snowshoes or skis and take a trip on our new Meadow to Sugar "Shack" loop trail! Hope to see you there! |
